Flossing Tips & Tricks – Straight From The Dentist

Flossing is one of the most important—but often overlooked—parts of a healthy oral care routine. While brushing cleans the surfaces of your teeth, flossing reaches the tight spaces between them where plaque and food particles easily hide. Without regular flossing, these areas can become breeding grounds for cavities and gum disease. Making flossing a daily habit helps protect your smile and supports long-term oral health.

One of the best flossing tips is to choose the right type of floss for your needs. Traditional string floss works well for many people, but those with tight spaces may prefer waxed floss, which slides more easily between teeth. If you have wider gaps, dental tape or a thicker floss may provide better cleaning. Floss picks or water flossers can also be great options for people who struggle with traditional floss or have orthodontic appliances.

Proper technique makes a big difference in how effective flossing is. Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most of it around your middle fingers and leaving a small section to work with. Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion, being careful not to snap it against your gums. Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and slide it under the gumline to remove plaque thoroughly.

Consistency is more important than perfection when it comes to flossing. Aim to floss at least once a day, ideally before brushing at night. This allows you to remove debris that has accumulated throughout the day and gives your toothpaste better access to the tooth surfaces. Creating a routine—such as flossing at the same time each evening—can help turn it into a lasting habit.

If flossing causes discomfort or bleeding, don’t be discouraged. Mild bleeding is common when you first start flossing regularly and often improves as your gums become healthier. Be gentle and avoid forcing the floss into tight areas. If pain or bleeding persists, it may be a sign of gum disease, and a dental professional can help determine the cause.

Flossing may seem like a small step, but its benefits are significant. By keeping the spaces between your teeth clean, you reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. With the right tools, proper technique, and a consistent routine, flossing can become a simple habit that plays a big role in maintaining a healthy, confident smile.
