Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

When you lose a tooth or live with gum disease for a while, the jawbone underneath can shrink. You may not notice it at first, but over time it starts to affect how you eat, how you look, and what treatments are still possible for you.
  • Told you lack bone for implants
  • Sunken look near missing teeth
  • Trouble chewing on one side
  • Dentures that no longer fit right
  • Face shape slowly changing
  • Feeling stuck with your options
  • If you see yourself in this list, you are not out of choices. Rebuilding that lost bone is often the first step toward getting your smile and your confidence back.

    Why Waiting Makes Things Harder

  • Bone keeps shrinking

Once bone loss starts, it continues over time and becomes harder to reverse later.

  • Options narrow down

The longer you wait, the fewer tooth replacement paths stay open to you.

  • Treatment gets bigger

Advanced bone loss can call for more involved grafting than an early approach would.

  • Nearby teeth shift

Neighboring teeth can drift into the gap, complicating future work.

  • Face support fades

Continued bone loss can change how your jaw and cheeks look.

  • Costs add up

More extensive rebuilding down the road often means a longer, costlier plan.

  • Acting sooner usually means a simpler path and a stronger result.

    What Is Dental Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a treatment that rebuilds jawbone that has been lost to missing teeth, gum disease, or injury. Your dentist places safe grafting material where the bone is thin or missing, and over the following months your body uses it as a scaffold to grow new, healthy bone in its place. The result is a thicker, stronger ridge that can properly support an implant or other restoration.

At Liberty Dentistry, we use 3D imaging and digital scanning to map your jaw before any bone grafting in Liberty, NC begins, so the plan fits your anatomy precisely. That level of planning means we place material exactly where you need it, no guesswork, and gives you a foundation designed around your specific smile.

  • New bone typically forms over several months
  • Grafting can be done with or without added implants
  • Bone loss affects a large share of adults with missing teeth
  • Transformations That Last

Watch real patients share how their dental journey restored not just their smiles, but their quality of life. These personal stories capture the relief and joy that come with comprehensive, caring treatment.

Is Bone Grafting Right for You?

Plenty of people wonder whether they qualify for bone grafting, and the good news is that candidacy is often broader than expected. A wide range of patients benefit, even some who were told years ago that implants were off the table. A quick evaluation is usually the only way to know for sure.
  • Have been told you don't have enough bone for implants
  • Are missing one or more teeth and want a permanent replacement
  • Have worn dentures for years and noticed your jaw changing
  • Want to protect your remaining teeth and facial structure
  • Have lost bone to gum disease or an injury
  • Not Sure Where You Stand?

Uncertainty here is completely normal, and it’s the most common question we hear. A bone grafting consultation gives you a clear, personalized answer along with a recommendation built around your situation.

What to Expect With Bone Grafting

Many patients come in nervous and tell us afterward that the process was far smoother than they imagined. Every step is designed around your comfort and your peace of mind.
    1

    Consultation and Imaging

We start by getting to know your goals and taking a close look at your jaw with 3D imaging and digital scans. This lets us see exactly where bone is missing and how much rebuilding you need. You'll sit down with us to review the findings in plain language, ask questions, and understand your options before anything moves forward. You leave this visit with a clear picture of your plan.

    2

    Personalized Planning

Using your scans, we design a grafting plan mapped to your specific anatomy. We select the right grafting material and pinpoint precisely where it needs to go, so treatment day is efficient and predictable. We also walk you through what to expect and answer any lingering concerns. By the end, you feel prepared and in control of the process.

    3

    Gentle Graft Placement

On treatment day, we keep you comfortable throughout. The area is fully numbed, and we place the grafting material into the site where bone needs to rebuild. Most patients are surprised by how manageable this step feels; you'll notice pressure rather than sharp sensation. When you head home, the foundation for your new bone is already in place.

    4

    Healing and Bone Growth

Over the next several months, your body gradually builds new bone around the graft. We check in along the way to make sure everything is progressing well. This is a quiet, hands-off stretch for you, with most daily activities returning to normal quickly. Each month brings you closer to a jaw that's ready for the next step.

    5

    Moving to Your Restoration

Once your new bone is strong and settled, we confirm you're ready for the final phase, often a dental implant or other restoration. We reassess with updated imaging to be certain the foundation is solid. From here, you move forward toward a complete, functional smile. This is where your patience pays off with results built to last.

Ready to Rebuild Your Smile's Foundation?

    Recovering After Bone Grafting

Most patients are surprised by how straightforward recovery feels. Some healing time is part of the process, and our team stays available to support you every step of the way.

    First 24 to 48 Hours

Expect mild swelling and some tenderness around the area, both of which are completely normal. Plan to rest, stick to soft foods, and follow the simple guidance we give you. Most patients find this stretch far more manageable than they anticipated, with over-the-counter pain relief typically doing the job.

    First 1 to 2 Weeks

Any initial discomfort continues to ease, and you'll gradually return to your usual routine. Soft foods remain your friend for a little while as the area settles. Most patients feel noticeably better within days and back to normal activities soon after.

    Long-Term Healing

Beneath the surface, your body is steadily building new bone, a process that unfolds quietly over several months. You won't feel this happening, and there's little you need to do beyond your normal care. Each check-in confirms your progress toward a strong, restoration-ready foundation.

Every patient heals at their own pace, so your recovery may look a little different from someone else’s. We’ll give you a personalized aftercare plan with clear instructions and direct access to our team whenever questions come up.

    Bone Grafting FAQs

Deciding on a treatment like this comes with plenty of questions, and that’s exactly how it should be. We want you to feel informed and comfortable before moving forward. Here are the answers patients ask about most.

    Does bone grafting hurt?

Comfort is our priority throughout. The area is fully numbed during placement, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Afterward, any tenderness is usually mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, and most people are pleasantly surprised by how smooth it feels.
When teeth go missing or gum disease sets in, the jawbone underneath can shrink over time. A graft rebuilds that lost bone so your jaw can properly support an implant or restoration. It’s often the step that makes a permanent tooth replacement possible.
Your body needs several months to build new bone around the graft, though this varies from person to person. The good news is that this healing happens quietly in the background while you go about your normal life. We monitor your progress along the way.
Very often, yes. Many patients who were told they weren’t candidates for implants become eligible once a graft rebuilds their foundation. An evaluation with 3D imaging is the best way to see what’s possible for your specific situation.
Bone grafting is a well-established, routine treatment performed widely in dentistry. We use careful planning and modern imaging to place material precisely and keep your treatment predictable. Our team will review your health history to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
Grafting materials come from several safe, thoroughly tested sources, and we’ll discuss which option suits you best. Your body uses the material as a scaffold, gradually replacing it with your own new bone as you heal. The choice depends on your needs and goals.
Once your body has built new bone, that bone becomes a lasting part of your jaw. With good oral care and regular checkups, the rebuilt foundation is designed to support your restoration for years to come. We’ll help you keep it healthy.
Rebuilding lost bone actually helps preserve your natural facial structure. Ongoing bone loss is what tends to cause a sunken appearance, so grafting works to protect the look you already have while setting up your smile for the future.
Soft foods are recommended for a short while as the area settles, but most patients return to their regular diet fairly quickly. We’ll give you simple, specific guidance so you know exactly what to enjoy and when as you heal.
Cost depends on the extent of grafting you need, which we’ll outline clearly after your evaluation. We believe in financial transparency, so you’ll see your options upfront, and payment options are available to help make treatment work for your budget.
