The making of a dentist

The Making of a Dentist

How old were you when you started thinking about what you wanted to do when you grew up? Did you have a clear idea even as a young child or did you start to wonder about it as a teenager? At some point we all consider what our opportunities are, where our strengths lie, and where those strengths may converge with our interests. When a younger Dr. Moses was investigating career paths, he looked particularly at jobs that would allow him to help people and he developed a special interest in medicine. As he researched specifics of opportunities in medicine: doctor, physician’s assistant, pharmacist, therapist, etc., he was especially drawn to the field of dentistry.

Thanks to many, many years of playing the piano Dr. Moses had the manual dexterity required for dentistry. In fact, the ADA recommends playing instruments, woodworking, painting, sewing, drawing, and knot tying as hobbies that will help develop the hand skills needed for individuals who are interested in pursuing dentistry as a career. Dr. Moses also had to study for and pass the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), a test comparable to the MCAT taken by aspiring medical doctors. After completing an undergraduate degree in exercise science and shadowing many different dentists, he applied for dental school. He completed four years of study related to anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, oral pathology, pharmacology, as well as many hours of clinical practice. Upon successfully completing dental school, Dr. Moses had to pass the North Carolina state licensing exam, composed of both a theoretical and practical portion.

There is a lot that goes into becoming a qualified dentist and you may be surprised to learn that the educational requirements don’t stop there. Each state demands that dentists complete a certain number of hours of continuing education each year to maintain and expand their skillset. Dr. Moses completed over 100 hours (significantly more than the minimum requirement!) in 2022, as well as ensuring that his staff had access to resources to be able to learn new skills and stay up to date with changes in the dental field.
